Is artificial intelligence already transforming the fashion industry?
Artificial intelligence is gradually making its way into the fashion industry, particularly to help create visuals, prepare product descriptions, analyze catalogs, and identify trends. It does not replace creative work or expertise in materials and patterns, but it can save time on certain tasks.
Support for Creativity
AI can be used to generate mood boards, explore color combinations, develop initial silhouette concepts, or formalize design briefs. Its role remains that of a support tool: a generated image does not guarantee that a garment can be manufactured, that it will be comfortable, or that it will be suitable for a particular customer base.
The work of the designer, patternmaker, and manufacturer remains essential to turning an idea into a high-quality product.
Faster product visuals
One of the most practical applications involves creating visuals for e-commerce and marketing. AI can showcase a product, adapt images to various formats, or generate variations of models and settings.
The French AI GEN VEETON project, led by Veeton, Showroomprivé, and Inria, aims in particular to generate images of clothing worn by virtual models based on simple product photos.
For wholesalers, this technology can make it easier to produce content for retailers. However, it should be used with caution: the images must accurately represent the color, material, cut, and details of the product being sold.
Organize the collections more effectively
AI can also help organize a catalog, generate an initial product description, identify related items, or analyze sales data. These features are useful when product information and inventory data are accurately recorded.
An AI tool cannot correct an incomplete database: the quality of the results depends directly on the quality of the content, images, and data provided.
Transparency and Oversight
Companies must verify the terms of use for these tools, the rights to imported content, and the reliability of the results generated. The Senate report on AI emphasizes that European rules regarding AI systems and content are being phased in on a case-by-case basis.
The best approach is to start with simple tasks that are managed by human teams: preparing descriptions, organizing collections, or assisting with communication. AI should improve the quality of information, not create confusion.
