The Environmental Cost of Clothing<\/strong><\/p>\n As of October 1, 2025, apparel brands may voluntarily display an environmental cost for their clothing. This framework is based, in particular, on greenhouse gas emissions, resource use, the impact on biodiversity, product sustainability, and the pollution generated.<\/p>\n As of June 2026, nearly 100 brands and more than 40,000 products were participating in this initiative.<\/p>\n Although this system remains voluntary, wholesalers and retailers would be wise to anticipate growing demand for information on the composition, origin, and environmental impact of products.<\/p>\n A law targeting ultra-fast fashion<\/strong><\/p>\n The law of July 8, 2026, aimed at reducing the environmental impact of the textile industry, includes a penalty for certain players in the ultra-fast-fashion sector, which could amount to as much as 50 percent of the retail price starting September 1, 2026. It also calls for awareness-raising messages on certain retail websites and a ban on advertising starting in 2027 for the targeted brands.<\/p>\n These rules do not automatically apply to all wholesalers or retailers. Their application depends on criteria set forth in the relevant regulations and on the specific circumstances of each company.<\/p>\n Traceability and Responsible Communication<\/strong><\/p>\n The law also includes provisions regarding traceability and the disclosure of the manufacturing locations of textile products. Professionals must therefore ensure they have complete product information: ingredients, labeling, origin, supporting evidence for marketing claims, and useful data for their retailers.<\/p>\n Claims such as \u201csustainable,\u201d \u201ceco-friendly,\u201d or \u201cenvironmentally responsible\u201d must be specific, justifiable, and verifiable.
